Software to play our audio files

MIDI

Free software for mid files. VanBascos Karaoke Player is a MIDI (Karaoke) Player for Windows 95/98/ME/NT 4/2000/XP coming with full-screen lyrics display. It supports skins, change and recall of tempo, volume, key control, mute/solo instruments, and much more.

Free software for mid files (supports soundfonts). TiMidity++ is an open source MIDI to WAVE converter and player. It uses Gravis Ultrasound-compatible patch files and/or SoundFont Banks to generate digital audio data from general MIDI files. The audio data can be played through any sound device or stored on disk. On a fast machine, music can be played in real time. TiMidity++ is written in C and runs under Linux, FreeBSD, HP-UX, SunOS, MacOSX, and Win32, and porting to other systems with gcc should be easy.

SoundFonts

  • Søren Bovbjerg's pianosOpen on a new window*
Marvellous free piano soundfont (we use it!): Steinway Mod. C. From the Bovbjerg' site also available the (free) sample of the Fazioli!

Other suggestions: the McCoy's soundfonts for the harpsichordOpen on a new window and for the organOpen on a new window. All McCoy sequences at kunstderfuge.com should be play using these soundfonts.

MIDI with SoundFont

  • XMPLAY (see below) is a freeware, small in size and fast, software for MIDI soundfonts.
  • SynthFontOpen on a new window (free, for Windows) which read soundfonts.

We do not recommend Windows Media Player for MIDI and MP3/OGG files, as it cannot read mid files correctly (only a few channels). And it cannot read OggVorbis music files and all types of MP3 files with a variable bit rate! Please associate your browser and system with a more versatile software such as WinAmp for audio files (MP3, OGG, M3U playlists or WAV, AIFF) and VanBasco for the mid files.

MP3/OGG

A popular, fast, flexible high-fidelity music player for Windows. Winamp support MP3 and MP2 audio with it s native Nitrane high-performance decoder as well as CD-audio, MOD, S3M, IT, XM and even SID audio formats. Winamp supports more than 10000 interface skins , 300 visualization plug-ins and CDDB for automatic CD audio title listing. You should pay attention during the install, as WinAmp will install several promotional icons (AOl, eMusic), unless they are unchecked from the list during installation (from snapfiles.com).

Small and compact MOD and audio player, that supports OGG, MP3, WMA, WAV / MO3, XM, MOD, UMX and other audio formats, as well as PLS, M3U and ASX playlists. It also supports Internet streaming for all supported file types (including MODs) and can write 8-32 bit WAV files. Additional features include Interpolation and volume/pan ramping, Automatic gain control, 5 band equalizer, reverb, skin support and more (from snapfiles.com).

You may find WinAmp at the Ogg Vorbis site too.

Ogg Vorbis is a direct replacement for MP3, without the technology tax - its completely royalty free, and will stay that way thanks to its free software licence. Ogg files are already supported by a number of software players such as Winamp, and the encoders are freely available. With its variable bitrate technology, your music in Ogg format should sound even better than MP3 at the same file size.

Other good softwares: Apple Quick TimeOpen on a new window (Win 2000/XP + iTunes Combo, Win 98/Me, Mac OS X, Mac OS) and ArtsConverge Multi-media player that combines Mpegs, active Jpegs, and timed text presentation in multiple languages.
